The underwriting conversation

Expect detailed questions. Trucking underwriters want each driver's experience and violations, the radius trucks run, the commodities, any interchange agreements and the equipment's age and value. They also review your FMCSA safety record and inspection results. Answer accurately; differences found later can lead to midterm changes or cancellation.

If a new venture has owners with years of trucking experience under another company, explain that history. It can make a difference in the options available.

Filings and certificates

Once a policy is bound, the insurer files proof of liability insurance with FMCSA if you have interstate authority. Certificates for brokers, shippers, terminals and contractors are issued by the agent. Keep a list of everyone who needs a certificate so renewals go smoothly.

If you are leased on today

Owner-operators leased to another carrier usually rely on that carrier's liability coverage while under dispatch, and carry their own physical damage and non-trucking liability. If you plan to leave the lease and run under your own authority, say so on the request. The coverage you need, and the filings, change once you operate on your own.

No obligation

Requesting quotes does not commit you to anything. If the options do not fit, you can keep your current coverage and ask us to stop contact.
